| Lake Shore News |
Lake Shore News is a monthly news column covering the activities of
railroading in Western Pennsylvania and all of Ohio. This vast expanse of
Railpace territory works west from the mountains of central Pennsylvania to
western Ohio. What railroads does this area include? Starting on the west
slopes of both Conrail's Allegheny crossing and CSX's famed Sand Patch
grade, Lake Shore details operations of both of these major carriers westward
to terminals in western Ohio and eastern Indiana. Norfolk Southern enters
the picture along the Lake Erie shoreline. Other carriers in Lake Shore
territory include the B&P system, the Southwest Pennsylvania, the Wheeling
& Lake Erie, Rail-Tex operations in Ohio, the I&O system, and the multitude
of shortlines, museums, tourist lines, and industrial operations.
Lake Shore News also highlights news covering general operations,
new customers, schedules, motive power, physical plant, special runs, final
operations, sales and abandonments, historical backgrounds, preservation,
and the occasional odd fact involving Lake Shore Land railroading. And to
eliminate the biggest misconception over the territory, we don't just cover
the lines along Lake Erie... we are here to be your source of information on
the railroads of the Ohio River Valley. This column is bordered on the
east by Tom Trencansky's Empire State Limited (New York), on the south
and east by The Allegheny Observer, written by Lee Gregory and covering
West Virginia, Maryland, and Pennsylvania railroading east of the
mountains, and on the west by the imagination of the readers... See
something interesting in Michigan or Eastern Indiana? Let me know. Mike
Zollitsch will continue to provide in-depth coverage of the northeastern
B&P lines.
Past "special" topics have included a tally of remaining Lake Shore
Land interlocking towers, occasional studies on rare Lake Shore locomotives
including recent information on GE U30Bs and the W&LE locomotive roster,
and continued updates on all of the news happening over this part of the
country.
With the continued merger scene confusion, Lake Shore News will
keep you informed on what's really happening along all of those
criss-crossing CSX, Conrail, and NS lines.
Confused or unsure of submitting? Just give it a try... write or
E-mail me whenever you can find information on the area's railroads. I'd
love to hear from you all. Just include a short writeup (covering all
needed details), and it'll probably end up next month's news. Belong to a
certain group? Ride a special trip? Keep tabs on a certain line? Follow
a certain locomotive or operation? Lake Shore readers would love to hear
about it! We're all here to share our love of railroads and enjoy the
hobby we have created. Branch out a bit and write me... I love
E-mail! Or just write me at Steve Gerbracht, 1431 Class of 17, Ithaca, NY 14853-5111.
If I can ever get all of these problem sets done, I'll see you trackside!
